Hi Everyone,

We know schedules are challenging and unpredictable around the holidays, but we like to follow up our feast with a late-autumn hike. We thought some of you might be available to join us this year. Let us know if you are interested.

Cold Turkey Hike

Looking for a place to recover from Thanksgiving gluttony?

Join us at Friends Wilderness Center and discover the natural beauty of Rolling Ridge: a private, 1400-acre wilderness preserve tucked between the Appalachian Trail and the Shenandoah River. Explore 20-plus miles of hiking trails. Scramble around mountain streams and waterfalls. Picnic by the pond and tour the facilities: Niles Cabin, yurt, treehouse, and geodesic dome.

Date: Saturday, November 25, 2015

Time: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

RSVP: Please let us know if you would like to join us. (For those coming from Annapolis - we might have space in our van for a few folks, assuming Reece doesn't insist on bringing his mountain bike.)

Weather Concerns: If the forecast looks inclement (i.e., bone-chilling rain, sleet, or snow that could leave us stranded), we will cancel and tuck in by the wood stove at home.

Food & Drink: Bring your leftovers to share for a casual, potluck picnic. Dishes can be warmed up in the Nile’s cabin oven or microwave and a moderate sized group can be accommodated for eating indoors if pre-season weather chills our picnic idea. Please help us minimize clean-up by providing your own plates, utensils, and mugs. Also, please retain recyclable materials and take them out with you for recycling. We will provide warm cider, a welcome atmosphere, and a gorgeous environment.

Driving Directions/Driving Time: Meet at the Niles Cabin at the Friends Wilderness Center. You have to slow down to a walking pace and ford a shallow stream to reach the cabin, but 2WD is sufficient and the scenery is worth it. If you have not been to the FWC before, please print out driving directions (http://friendswilderness.org/directions0.aspx) as it is easy to miss key turns and to end up miles from where you need to be if you are going from memory. We also recommend that you estimate your driving time from your point of departure by using MapQuest or Google and adding in 15 minutes of extra time to give yourself a cushion.

Donation Suggested: FWC does not charge for visiting the property, but they welcome a donation: $10 per person is suggested (a family discount is available), or more if you would like, to provide upkeep on the facilities and the land. Donations can be made using a personal check, cash, or by credit card via the FWC website ‘Support’ page which uses PayPal for secure online payments (http://friendswilderness.org/support0.aspx). If this event interests you, then by all means drive out and join us and set aside any concern you might have about a donation if this is an obstacle to your attending.

We would love to have you join us!! Hope to see you at the FWC.
